  • young wonders

One family we cared for includes a young girl who began attending Young Wonders when she was 9 months old. Her mother was on Welfare-to-Work at the time and the baby had several developmental delays as well as severe separation anxiety. We were able to help the child receive special education services and over the course of her four years with us she graduated out of needing those special education supports. She participated in the universal pre-k program her final year with us and was on track to attend kindergarten the next fall with no developmental delays. The girl and the mom became so attached to the staff at the center that even though she was in the pre-k room at the end of her enrollment, she made it a point to go around every day when picked up to say goodbye to her teachers that she had in other classrooms. Mom was successful in attaining a job that she held for a period of three years until recent layoffs unfortunately put her back out on the job hunt. Fortunately though, because of the universal pre-k program, the child did not have to stop attending our program. She otherwise would have no longer been able to receive day care subsidies to pay for tuition since she was not currently eligible for Welfare-to-Work programs.  We were so happy to be a part of such a wonderful success story for this child and her mom.  We wish her well for the future.

  • residential

We would like to recognize one of our hard working residents who recently received an A+ and an A- in two of her courses at BCC. She is in recovery and has had to overcome many obstacles but is currently doing extremely well in all aspects of her life. We wish her all the best for the future and hope that the YWCA's continued support will help to empower her as she moves forward.

Additionally, another resident in  IILP, Amy, who attends BOCES, has recently received 2 awards.  She received a” Certificate of Achievement for Outstanding Student” from her BOCES/Animal Science program & “Hardest Working Student Award” from BOCES/East Learning Center.  In addition, she made honor roll last semester.  We are very proud of her!

  • ENCOREplus

Deborah Norman was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010 and thanks ENCOREplus for all their help in getting her screened so the tumor was detected.  ENCOREplus also referred her to cancer services which she always thanks for their help throughout her journey.

Joan loves ENCOREplus for not only putting her on the grant for several years to help her get screened while she was uninsured, but she also loves and greatly appreciates that we can transport her to and from screenings.

Connie says "I am very appreciative of ENCORE for their reminders to get my mamograms.  They are very helpful at my age to be reminded."
